On 28 February 2025, an astronomical event of rare beauty occurred, a so-called planetary constellation: all the planets of our solar system were worldwide visible simultaneously in the night sky, seemingly in a row. On this day, ‘f/low’ presented PLANETS, a sonic representation of the solar system that combines astronomy and art.
Thomas Kessler’s composition explores cosmic harmony through piano tones derived from planetary data.
Starting from the frequency a'=432Hz, which represents the Earth, each planet is given a corresponding piano note that reflects its size, orbit and distance from the Sun: larger planets emit deeper tones, the repetition frequency reflects the orbital period, and the tone length correlates with the distance from the Sun.
